The Redlands and Yucaipe Electric Railway Company was incorporated in 1907 but never got off the ground. The Southern Pacific Railroad Company was formed with the intent of connecting Southern California with the east through Yuma, Arizona. In the late 1800s, the Southern Pacific Railroad began developing plans for this extension, and the growing desert towns of Yucaipe and Redlands, California (east of Los Angeles) were possibly on the proposed route. The route through San Timoteo Canyon northeast of Redlands in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains was selected in 1875. Yucaipa was chosen as an alternate site for the next two decades, however after many promises, the idea really never came to fruition.
In 1909 the Redlands-Yucaipa Land Company announced plans for an electric railroad to connect Redlands to Yucaipa. The newspaper Redlands Citro Graph reported on April 27, 1895: “again we hear rumors that the Southern Pacific contemplates building from Crafton to Beaumont through the upper end of Yucaipa Valley.” However, the plans to connect Redlands to Oak Glen was not successful because at that time, Yucaipa was not much of a town with little population and only ranches and orchards. There were written plans for tracks that would take passengers from Redlands and Highland to Los Angeles. There were also other electric railways, the San Bernardino Valley Traction Company and Redlands Street Railway. The newspaper San Bernardino Sun reported on November 23, 1909, “the company will build an electric railway from Redlands to Yucaipa City as soon as materials can be delivered, orders for rails and ties having been placed some time ago.” In 1911, the Redlands Daily Facts reported in an article that electric/steam railroads would run through Yucaipa within 10 months. The discussion of constructing of various train tracks running through Yucaipa Valley was still going on. Drawings existed from about 1917 showing possible Pacific Electric train routes. The speculated reasons why Pacific Electric/Santa Fe Railroad never made it to Yucaipa included World War I and the Nationalization Act which refers to the “take over to end some of the “cut-throat competition and to make railways more efficient to aid the war effort.”
