The New Orleans and North Eastern Railroad was originally chartered in 1868 as the Mandeville and Sulphur Springs Railroad (changed to New Orleans and North Eastern in 1870), however the road was not constructed until the early 1880s, when it was acquired by the Alabama, New Orleans, Texas and Pacific Junction Railways Company. The New Orleans and North Eastern Railroad ran 196 miles between New Orleans and Meridian, Mississippi (in Lauderdale County). In 1916, the road was acquired by the Southern Railway, which had been marketing the line as a portion of the Queen and Crescent Route since the 1880s.
