Description
Mid-Century Peruvian Wooden and Sterling Silver Trim BoxBeautiful wooden box with sterling silver top frame with Chancay fabric under the glass top.
It contains what looks like a pre-Colombian fabric, specifically a Chancay textile featured inside the top of the box.
The Chancay were an archeological civilization that developed between the Valleys of Fortaleza, Pativilca, Supe, Huaura, Chancay, Chillon, Rimac and Lurin, on the central coast of Peru, from about 1000 to 1470 CE. The most well known Chancay artifacts are the textiles which ranged from embroidered pieces, different types of decorated fabrics. A variety of techniques, colours.
The Chancay culture is the first of the Peruvian cultures that had mass production of ceramics, textiles and metals such as gold and silver which were ritualistic and domestic goods. They were also noted for their wood carved items.
It is likely this piece was acquired approx. 1960's, perhaps in Lima, Peru.
The purpose was a way to feature various ancient Chancay textile fragments.
Excellent condition, well preserved (see pictures).
