Details about the item:
The crock stands approximately 12” tall with the lid on and 10”tall without the lid. The crock measures 8" in diameter with the interior opening measuring (inside wall to inside wall) approximately 6.75”. The spigot appears wooden and the T-shaped plunger/ handle is present and moves freely. The part of the spigot that fits inside of the crock opening has the cork sleeve stuck on it. The cork is discolored, cracked, and appears shrunken as the spigot mechanism is loose. (This spigot would not hold any liquid in the crock with the withered cork sleeve!)
This is made from heavy stoneware. All surfaces are glazed except the exterior bottom. The bottom is marked with the words “Made in England” pressed into the stoneware. There are several small bumps and imperfections in the pottery, but they appear to be under the glaze, so I assume that they were in the pottery as the crock was made.
The crock has two handles that protrude one inch from each side. The handles are intact and do not have any flea bites or chips. The area around the handles feels a little gritty, especially under the handles, as there are fine dots of clay or sand in the area where the handles were attached. Again, the small bumps are under the glaze, so they appear to have occurred during the manufacturing process.
The crock is sand colored with tiny flecks of dark blue throughout. The graphic on the front reads MASON’S BEER EXTRACTS across the top of the graphic. Seated in the middle, is a young woman in period dress with books and other items strewn on the floor at her feet. To the left of the woman, it reads BUTLER BREED & Co. BOSTON, MASS. And to the right is printed TURN WATER INTO DELIGHFUL NON-INTOXICATING BEER. The graphic appears to be dark blue. On the right side, the “DE” in delightful and the “NON” in non-intoxicating have a shadow of the letters on the image, possibly where the template slipped slightly as the graphic was painted on.
Condition:
This crock is in vintage used condition. There are some bumps and rough spots, although they appear to be under the glaze or in areas where the glaze appears to have not coated entirely. There are no chips or cracks in the crock or the lid. The spigot is discolored and dried out. There is slight crazing in the lid.
