Description
Framed reproduction print of illuminated miniature depicting the Crucifixion of Christ. It was the work of an unknown artist, prepared for the Psalter of Abbot Robert de Lindesey. Abbot Robert, who presided over the Benedictine Abbey in Petersborough, England, died in 1222. This Psalter, therefore, was crafted before that date. The image is here presented in an 8” x 10” frame (outside dimensions of 10¼
” x 12¼
”), wall mount and easel-back.
Roundels at the upper corners of the miniature depict figures holding a chalice (upper left) and the tablets of the ten commandments (upper right), signifying the new and old covenants respectively. Middle figures left and right are likely prophets, while the bottom images depict St. Peter and Moses, again symbolizing the new and old law.
The image of Christ appears emaciated, depicting a man of sorrows (Psalm 22:2-19) acquainted with grief and suffering (Isaiah 53:1-10). The cross itself is not of made of dead timber but living wood sprouting foliage, a symbol of the Tree of Life and the promise of resurrection. This imagery is used especially in worship services during Holy Week, recalling the results for humanity of Christ's sacrifice (“O happy fault . . . which gained for us so great a Redeemer”).
