Description

This is a fine lithograph reproduction of a ceiling tondo by the painter Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio). The image of THEOLOGY was painted probably between 1509 and 1511, Stanza della Segnatura, Palazzi Pontifici, Vatican City. The figure is of a woman dressed in the colors of the three Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity (White, Green and Red) and pointing at the fresco situated below it, which is entitled DISPUTATA . The two cherubs on either side of her hold plaques upon which are written the Latin words: DIVINAR (um) RER (um) NOTITIA, (Knowledge of Divine Things).
The perfectly circular opening in the center is TRIPLE matted in off-white, gold and pale blue and it is framed in a 1 1/8" wide gilded wood frame, glass covered, with laurel wreath and lyre symbolism in raised gesso as decoration. The outside dimensions of the piece measure 17" square, 5/8" thick, all ready for wall mounting with pasted dust sealer on reverse. It is approximately 35 years old, condition graded Very Fine- quite perfect, actually- with perhaps the slightest bit of wear to the gilding on the beautiful molding of the frame, unless this was intended as antiquing effect.
A $ 25.00 postage and handling surcharge is included in the listing price- since, because of its fragility, it must be double boxed for safer shipment- an  unusual framed graphic.
