This was my favorite stone, the medium side quickly cuts away broken tips and planes the entire bottom surface, the fine side of the stone gives the grave a mirror finish. It was used a lot but retains totally flat surfaces with no groves. I used high speed steel gravers only.

Engraving on Precious Metals - A. Brittain Hardcover : 228 pages
Item Weight : 1.58 pounds Filled with illustrations B&W
"A book for professionals and others who wish to learn hand engraving as a hobby or trade, and reveals many previously undisclosed practices of the commercial engraver which help to make his skill quite astonishing. All aspects of the craft are covered exhaustively, including the relatively modern innovation of the high-class machine engraver. Illustrated throughout with over 250 drawings, the book gives practical hints for use in the workshop, while artistic matters are covered extensively in chapters on lettering design and layout, monograms, nameplates and ornamentation. A basic knowledge of ancillary crafts can be found in the sections on piercing, polishing, soldering and inlaying, and the use of unusual materials such as ivory, wood, or plastic is also discussed."
A. Brittain was a director of an engraving business in London working for the top jewellers and responsible for some of the highest grade work turned out today.
* I spoke with a representative at Pepe and was told that the soonest new stock would become available sometime in the 4th quarter of 2021 and to expect a 50% increase in prices.
I worked as a self employed 'hands-on' jeweler for over 45 years. I became acquainted with a master engraver in the mid 1970s, he would pick up work from the high-end jewelers in central Ohio. I went to visit his workshop one time with a job for him. Being very impressed with him and his work I asked him a few questions. He told me that he enjoyed his work, but he wished he would have picked another trade that would give him a better income. Back then hand engravers charged pennies per letter, and that's why there are so few true - pneumatic engraving is easily identified and is not true hand engraving - hand engravers today.
There will always be high-end customers that appreciate and demand true hand engraving. Today, instead of pennies per letter a good hand engraver will charge dollars per letter or will give a set price per job, and he will stay very busy.
If you are good with your hands and you are artistic, with diligence you can and will succeed with this almost lost art. The trade book that's included is invaluable.
I bought a GRS power hone years ago and found it to be a waste of money. By the time it takes to chuck the graver into the fixture you will have finished with the sharpening stones and will be cutting metal. The power hones ceramic finish discs quickly wear grooves and become useless, just use sharpening stones and a strop.
