    PREMIER 1861 STERLING SILVER MASTER / TABLE SNUFF BOX
    EDWARD SMITH, BIRMINGHAM
    A highly refined box of oblong form crisply decorated overall with engine turning and incised line borders.  Cover engraved with C-scroll cartouche containing leafy vines flanking heraldic lion passant above HBW monogram of dedicatee.  Remarkable 17-knuckle flush hinge.  Cast scrollwork thumb-lift.

    . with hallmark of Edward Smith, queen's head and sterling cypher.  Bottom stamped with date letter (M), "ES" and Birmingham anchor.
    Major Henry B. Williams and Sir J. Maxwell Graves served together in the Royal North Gloucester Regimental Army.  Williams was 54 years old in 1864.
    NOTE:  Edward Smith registered his first independent hallmark with the Birmingham assay office in 1826.  Smith moved to Howard Street the following year.  The widely acclaimed silversmith was best known for top-quality boxes.  The last public record of Edward Smith as snuff box manufacturer is 1864.
