This line’s roots date back to 1870 with the formation of the Ionia & Lansing Rail Road Company. In 1876 this route was merged into the Detroit, Lansing & Northern.
In 1896 the DL&N was reorganized as the Detroit, Grand Rapids & Western Railroad. On January 1, 1990, the Chicago & West Michigan, Flint & Pere Marquette, and Detroit, Grand Rapids & Western were consolidated to form the Pere Marquette RR, the state's largest railroad system under one management.
