    Description

    A classic Chinese
Longquan Celadon ware glazed Kendi vessel, Song Dynasty. Made for the Southeast Asian market. With a globular body, long neck, flanged mouth and large, voluptuous mammary spout. The body and spout incised with a series vertical lines wrapping around the body.
A  pouring vessel with a spout on the side but without a handle. While pouring, the pot is held around its neck. Pouring vessels of this kind is not found at all in China before the Song dynasty where the earliest types seems to have been straight spouted vessels.  While they are made in various materials, and come in various sizes, the basic components are the same, including a globular body, narrow neck with an everted or flanged mouth, and a "mammary" spout, so named due to its resemblance to the female breast. Kendi are used in both daily and ritual life as both pouring and drinking vessels.
The Kendi glazed is all over in a pleasing celadon glaze. The glaze pooling beautifully in the recessed and incised areas, creating a nice contrasting effect. There in the celadon glaze an alluring crackle just under the surface.
