The Belleville and Eldorado Railroad was a southern Illinois railroad chartered in 1861, however, funding for the road was not obtained until the mid-1870s, when the road was begun from Belleville, Illinois (St. Clair County) to Eldorado (Saline County), and was completed in 1879 (a distance of about 120 miles). The line became the St. Louis, Alton and Terre Haute Railroad in 1897.
