"The Archangel Gabriel"
Antique Stained Glass
–
Powell & Sons
One of our favorite representations of the Archangel Gabriel is this stained glass made by Powell & Sons for St. John’s Church in Wiltshire, England. It was made in 1915, towards the end of the Art Nouveau movement, an art style we are very fond of. Art Nouveau was a reaction against academic art. It used elegant, organic forms and blurred the line between fine arts and craftsman arts. We love the lush, casual beauty of Gabriel here, his nonchalance, his towering stature! We are fascinated by the blues and greens of his wings. We suspect he has all the color in this picture because he is from Heaven, while the Earth is a practical dull beige in comparison. The scroll says Ave Maria because Gabriel brought the Annunciation to Mary. He holds the Easter Lily because the Annunciation brought the Christ into this world.
