    Description

This is an original antique framed paper sign of Alice Roosevelt issued as an advertising piece by The Brown Shoe Company in 1902.  This is a framed paper sign or poster that features a full color portrait of Alice Roosevelt with the title “
    OUR WHITE HOUSE QUEEN
”.    The lower left hand corner is printed with a 1902 copyright by The Brown Shoe Company so thus the date.  The frame is wood and appears to be the original frame and matches closely another example of this sign I found online.   There is no glass so the front of the frame is open to the poster.   The frame dimensions are about 29.75” x 21.5”.
The image is of a strikingly beautiful Alice Roosevelt who in 1902 was creating something of a national sensation as newly inaugurated President Theodore Roosevelt’s oldest child and 17 year old fashion icon.   She has been described as “the Original Wild Child of the White House” and was known as a rule-breaker in an era when women were under great pressure to conform.   She was known for gambling, smoking in public and keeping a pet snake in the White House named “Emily Spinach” among other things.  She had a rapier wit and is remembered today for many great quotes and one liners.  Her father President Theodore Roosevelt once said “I can be President of the United States or I can attend to Alice.  I can not possibly do both.”
This sign issued by The Brown Shoe Company in 1902 sought to capitalize on her celebrity and appeal to the patriotism of the shoe buying public.   The poster shows moderate wear and has some crackling to the paper in places but still retains great color and has wonderful display quality.   This is an original antique issued in 1902.  Email any questions.  Thanks for looking.
