Certificate Description
1891 Lehigh Valley RR Stock Certificate. Attractive Lehigh Valley RR scripophily certificate with three vignettes: Asa Packer left, steam train center, and river valley on right. This railroad had an interesting history. Anthracite coal was discovered in Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania in 1791 (renamed Jim Thorpe in 1954). The only practical means to transport the coal was to boat it down the often unnavigable Lehigh River. A canal was constructed, and by the 1820s the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company had a near-monopoly on the mining and transportation of coal in the region. To break the monopoly and also to improve transportation, the Delaware Lehigh Schuylkill & Susquehanna Railroad was incorporated in 1846 to build a line from Mauch Chunk to Easton, Pennsylvania, where the Lehigh River flows into the Delaware. Construction began in 1851 with the management and financing provided by Asa Packer. The railroad was renamed the Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1853, and began operating in 1855.
