Very Rare and original, 1877 Chromolithograph on Tin, American Tobacco Company Advertising Sign for "Globe Tobacco" lithographed by the premier American Sign Maker - Wells & Hope of Philadelphia.
This original, 19th century, Tin Lithograph Advertising Sign measures approx. 18” by 24” and advertises "Globe Fine Cut Chewing Tobacco" manufactured by Walker, McGraw Company of Detroit, Michigan. The sign was manufactured by one of the finest American manufacturers of Lithographed Tin Advertising Signs - Wells & Hope Co of Philadelphia and is copyright 1877 by Hope & Wells.
The Sign features a central image of a World Globe with text that reads “Walker, McGraw Co’s Fine Cut Globe Tobacco”. There are images of a world globe in each of the four corners of the Sign and each Globe has text naming the Tobacco brands manufactured by Walker, McGraw. These include “Globe”, “World”, “Myrtle” and “Hope”.
This rare and original Wells & Hope, Globe Fine Cut Tobacco Advertising Sign has damage to the surface as can be seen in the scans below. An area at the center of the Sign has lost the surface lithography and the Sign has been prepared for restoration. The surface of the Sign is stable and sound with no active flaking. We have had our restorer prepare the surface for restoration by cleaning and stabilizing the surface and leaving the area of surface loss ready for in painting. Even with the loss to the lithography, the Sign displays nicely and should the buyer wish to have the Sign restored we will be happy to provide contact information for two of the very best Tin Litho restorers in the country.
